SPOTLIGHT / Hayley Richards – Proust Questionnaire

Last month we welcomed Hayley to the TDCA team as an Interior Design Assistant after she completed some work experience with us late last year. In her third year of an Interior Design degree at QUT, Hayley has brought a laid back attitude, love of old school beats and eye for detail to the office. We asked her to complete the famous Proust Questionnaire to get an insight into her world outside of TDCA…. which is definitely not filled with Lizards or Mushrooms!

What is your idea of perfect happiness? I think the day you retire from a truly satisfying career, having achieved all you wanted to, in good health, and set off with your life partner to do whatever it is exactly that retiree’s do, haha, travel etc… I reckon that will be a truly fantastic day.

What is your greatest fear? LIZARDS!

Which living person do you most admire? Barack Obama

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I have a nasty habit of taking things at face value at times, it works both for and against me.

What is the trait you most deplore in others? Selfishness!

What is your greatest extravagance? Probably my linen bed set and extensive pillow collection – definitely not an essential few items for a uni student to invest in, but I figured treat yo’ self!

What is your favorite journey? At the risk of sounding like a complete nerd… the one I’m currently on. The uni/career journey and figuring out exactly what I want to do, where I want to be and how to get there.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Humility (in context/moderation of course) – be proud of your accomplishments!

On what occasion do you lie? When I’m embarrassed…

What do you dislike most about your appearance? The uncontrollable cowlicks that pop up in my hair whenever there is rain within a 50km radius of me!

Which living person do you most despise? Donald Trump. (haha, that’s the second American Politian to pop up in this questionnaire!)

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Literally, actually, probably (could my vocab be any more basic?!) and a whole heap of profanity’s.

What is your greatest regret? Not doing a semester abroad within my degree.

What or who is the greatest love of your life? My beautiful grandfather.

When and where were you happiest? I had some hardcore euphoria going on when I got to witness The Northern Lights after traveling 40+ hours in Norway. I was chronically sleep deprived, and was freakin’ freezing at the time, but it was still seriously epic!

Which talent would you most like to have? To sing – I do not have a musical bone in my body!

What is your current state of mind? 50% stressed about uni, 50% lacking the motivation to get shit done.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? My stubbornness.

If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be? The fact that we’re all so spread out!

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Moving to a foreign country as soon as I finished school was proper terrifying at the time, but it ended up being one of the best things I’ve ever done!

If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? I’d want to be a lusciously haired golden retriever that’s the overly loved and spoilt pet of a wealthy family living in Bardon. THAT would be the life!

What is your most treasured possession? I think the silver ring that I wear most days. I try to buy a ring in every country I visit, (which is a surprisingly difficult task when you have abnormally small fingers like myself) I got this one in Greece and I just love it. I wear it most days.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? True self-inflicted loneliness

Where would you like to live? Anywhere where there’s a perfect balance of city V beach. But not too populated… is that too much to ask?!

What is your favorite occupation? An interior designer… duh?!

What is your most marked characteristic? Probably the fact that I’m always the first to take the mick out of myself.

What is the quality you most like in a man? A sense of drive and self-motivation

What is the quality you most like in a woman? Positivity and confidence

What do you most value in your friends? Their humour and support. 🙂

Who are your favorite writers? James Frey

What is it that you most dislike? MUSHROOMS!

How would you like to die? With minimal suffering.

What is your motto? I try to live by ‘replace fear of the unknown with curiosity’ but my mantra for 2017 is ‘No bad days’

CRUSHING HARD / FEATURE CEILINGS

Why have a feature wall, when you can have a feature ceiling.. With their ability to completely transform a space in a quirky an unexpected way, a feature ceiling is not for the faint hearted. They’re bold, and can be aggressive, but holy smokes they are sexy. We are crushing hard on feature ceilings at the moment and their suggested intimacy. Remember, always look UP.

TDCA in the US of A / SHOW HOUSE

While down in the South (Atlanta) visiting friend and family, Tara was taken to a “Designer Show House”. Never heard of the concept before? Neither had we!
A ‘Show House’ is essentially a display home, however in this instance it was renovated and decorated with the intent of supporting a charity. The home owners put their home forward, interior designers are given a room each to refurbish and the house is then “on display” to the public for a few weeks, allowing people to tour through, see the work of the designer, and attend events hosted at the home. At the end, the owners can decide to purchase everything (aside from the kitchen and bathrooms – these are designed to stay), or have the home returned to its original stage. It gives the designers a chance to have a ‘live’ example of their work while raising funds for a charity at the same time. Genius!
While Tara took heaps of her own photos, the below professional shots do it much more justice. See more about the house at http://www.atlantamagazine.com/magnolia/

HOT FIND / MATTER

Tara stumbled across this showroom while in NYC, and was instantly taken by the intriguing lighting design and refined selection of national and international contemporary design. With their lighting range “Matter Made’ manufactured locally in Brooklyn, you can bet we’ll be trying to inject some NY flair into our future spaces with their pieces.

CRUSHING HARD / GREEN MARBLE

Green marble is one of those materials that you know about, kinda forget about, and then become obsessed with when you see it in an interior and remember how much you love it… Yep, it’s a bit of a sneaky assassin. It doesn’t throw itself at you, but once you take notice, it’s hard to forget. We are crushing hard over green marble at the moment and its subtle yet intense personality.
